NSF BIO supports research that advances understanding of the diversity, distribution, and evolutionary history of life on Earth. This research may encompass a broad range of topics and approaches ranging from exploratory biodiversity discovery and description to phylogenetic comparative studies. This also includes research on the identification, naming and classification of biodiversity. NSF BIO supports research that addresses fundamental questions such as: What kinds of organisms now live, or have lived, on Earth? How many have there been? How are they related? How can evolutionary history shed light on natural patterns and processes?
