FEMA provides fire service grants including the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and non-affiliated emergency medical service organizations. Since 2001, AFG has distributed equipment, protective gear, vehicles, training, and resources to first responders. Eligible recipients include fire departments, state fire training academies, and emergency medical service organizations. FY 2024 awarded 1,678 grants totaling $291.6 million. The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program provides funding to increase or maintain the number of trained front line firefighters available in communities, enhancing ability to meet NFPA 1710 and NFPA 1720 standards.
