USDA’s response to the New World Screwworm (NWS) is a top priority. Its National Detector Dog Training Center (NDDTC) in Newnan, GA, is expanding its NWS training program to strengthen USDA’s operational readiness and ensure canine teams are fully prepared for field conditions. Recent pilot activities in Texas demonstrated that NWS detector dogs must be safely acclimated to livestock environments including interactions with cattle, sheep, and goats to build the skills necessary for effective detection in real?world settings. To support this requirement, NDDTC must maintain goats onsite as essential training aids.
