DURIP, NSF MRI, and NIH S10 can all support research instrumentation, but they are not interchangeable equipment grants. Defense relevance, shared-use expectations, current research awards, institution-level submission limits, instrument type, price, and lifecycle support determine the right route. This guide gives research offices and faculty a decision record for the current and next application windows.

Choose by Mission and Use, Not by the Word Equipment

A costly instrument can look eligible under several federal programs until the actual user group and purpose are mapped. DURIP supports equipment that augments university research capabilities relevant to Department of Defense technical interests. NSF Major Research Instrumentation supports acquisition or development of shared-use research instruments that advance NSF-supported science and engineering. NIH's restructured S10 Shared Instrumentation Grant supports one commercially available instrument or integrated system for NIH-supported investigators. NIH's Seed Instrumentation Support program serves a smaller equipment range with its own user and institutional rules. The buyer's first job is not drafting. Build a route record with instrument and configuration, total quote, federal request, mission area, acquisition or development, commercially available status, major users and active awards, shared-use plan, existing alternatives, location, renovation need, technical leadership, operations, service contract, maintenance, data and cybersecurity, internal competition, submission limit, deadline, and one route decision. Funding Landscape's August 10 non-personalized production probes did not produce a complete three-card research-equipment tier without drift. One visible set included instrumentation-focused small-business notices, LIGO support, chemical measurement, and infrastructure programs rather than three clean university equipment routes. The automatic panel is therefore withheld. Use the guide's source-linked examples and manual search as leads, then verify each official notice.

The Current Calendar Has Different Clocks

Three FY 2027 Defense University Research Instrumentation Program records are open through November 6, 2026: Air Force, Navy, and Army. Each service record is an application route within the coordinated DURIP competition, not a separate reason to triple the program amount. NSF's MRI solicitation is not currently accepting proposals, but it lists an October 15 through November 16, 2026 submission window. The page also says the 2025 window was canceled. A team preparing for 2026 should use the current NSF page and any replacement or revision rather than copying an old campus calendar. NIH's S10 opportunity list shows the restructured Shared Instrumentation Grant, PAR-27-022, and Seed Instrumentation Support, PAR-27-021. The first SIG receipt date was July 27, 2026 and has passed, but the official announcement lists July 1, 2027 and July 1, 2028 dates. SIS lists a September 25, 2026 receipt date. Record an agency window, campus limited-submission deadline, quote cutoff, approval calendar, and official submission time separately. A federal deadline does not preserve an institution's internal slot.

DURIP Is One Coordinated Program With Service Routes

The Air Force, Navy, and Army Grants.gov records each display an estimated $28 million and a $50,000 award floor. Army and Navy list $3 million ceilings, while the Air Force record lists a $7 million ceiling. Treat the repeated $28 million as one coordinated program estimate unless the official announcement expressly allocates separate service pools. Adding the three records to claim $84 million would count the same program figure three times. DURIP is for accredited U.S. institutions of higher education acquiring major equipment or instrumentation that augments current or develops new research capabilities relevant to DoD. The Air Force University Research Initiative overview describes that mission relationship. The current service announcements and attachments control eligible institutions, topics, budgets, submission mechanics, and any exception above ordinary ceilings. Build a service-fit table before selecting a record. Map the current research program, technical area, cognizant service or office, equipment capability, current limitation, users, and defense-relevant research enabled. Confirm whether the same instrument is being submitted to more than one service and whether the announcements permit it. Similar application routes do not authorize duplicate or conflicting requests. For readiness, secure the exact configuration and quote, site and utility needs, installation and acceptance plan, user and project evidence, equipment-management process, and institutional authorization. If the case is primarily teaching, general laboratory modernization, or unrelated to a service research priority, DURIP is not made suitable by defense vocabulary.

NSF MRI Supports Shared Acquisition or Development

NSF MRI supports acquisition or development of an integrated research instrument. The current solicitation accepts requests from $100,000 through $4 million for most eligible organizations, with a narrow below-$100,000 path for mathematics, social, behavioral and economic sciences, and non-Ph.D.-granting institutions. Track 1 is below $1.4 million, Track 2 runs from $1.4 million through $4 million, and Track 3 covers helium-conservation equipment within the stated range. The solicitation permits an organization up to two Track 1 submissions, one Track 2 submission, and one additional Track 3 submission, subject to its rules for performing organizations and significantly funded subawards. That makes sponsored-projects coordination a material eligibility step. A strong faculty idea can be blocked by the institutional slate if it enters the internal process too late. MRI expects shared use, research and research-training impact, a justified instrument need, and an operations and maintenance commitment. Acquisition and development are different cases. Acquisition needs a commercially available integrated instrument and a comparison with alternatives. Development needs a credible technical and management plan for a new capability, expertise, schedule, risk controls, and an instrument operational by the end of the award period. Do not treat the $75 million anticipated program amount as an individual award. Do not treat the $4 million request maximum as a typical budget. Build the request from the instrument, track, users, research enabled, installation, operations, and current solicitation.

NIH SIG and SIS Start With the User Group

NIH's PAR-27-022 Shared Instrumentation Grant announcement consolidated the prior SIG, High-End Instrumentation, and Basic Instrumentation programs. It accepts a single commercially available instrument or integrated system, with a $300,000 minimum and $5 million maximum award. NIH states that there is no cap on the total instrument cost, but the federal award cannot exceed $5 million. SIG requires at least three NIH-funded Major Users, each the PD or PI on a distinct active NIH research award. The announcement says their projects together should use at least 65 percent of accessible usage time. It requires an itemized vendor quote, a management structure, an advisory committee, technical expertise, research-project evidence, institutional commitment, and a long-term operations and maintenance plan. Renovation, general facility equipment, stand-alone general computing, and teaching-only equipment are among the nonresponsive categories. The PAR-27-021 Seed Instrumentation Support announcement covers awards from $50,000 to $400,000 and lists September 25, 2026 as its first due date. Do not assume the smaller range means a lighter institutional or user-fit review. Verify the current user, prior-award, instrument, and organization rules in the full announcement. NIH S10 is not a generic purchase subsidy. Start with eligible research users and the required usage case, then confirm the instrument and price.

Build One Evidence Package Before the Route Splits

A common readiness package can support the route decision without pretending the applications are interchangeable. First, define the capability gap. Name the measurements or processes that current equipment cannot perform, the research delayed or constrained, and the nearby instruments considered. Distinguish unavailable capacity, unsuitable specifications, prohibitive access, and ordinary convenience. Second, build the user-and-project table. For every major and minor user, record appointment, active award, project period, research aim, instrument need, estimated annual hours, sample or data type, technical readiness, and overlap. The program decides which awards and users count. A large list of interested names cannot replace the required qualifying core. Third, freeze the configuration and full lifecycle budget. Preserve the unaltered quote where required, academic discount, accessories, warranty, freight, tariffs, site preparation, utilities, renovation, software, computing, service, consumables, staff, training, data storage, and eventual replacement. Mark which costs the federal request permits and which the institution must carry. Fourth, define governance: location, scheduling, priority, fees, access, training, safety, quality control, data, conflicts, advisory group, technical manager, downtime, service, and performance reporting. A shared instrument needs an operating institution after the one-year purchase award or acquisition project ends. Finally, run the evidence package against the current service announcement, NSF track, NIH user rules, campus submission limit, and internal approvals. Select one route, split genuinely different requests, monitor a later window, or reject the purchase.

Monitor the Instrument, Mission, and Institution Together

Start with a manual search for current research instrumentation and equipment grants. The August 10 production tier was too mixed for an automatic panel, so treat every result as a lead. Open the official source and verify that the applicant, instrument, mission, users, date, and application stage align. Save separate watches for routes that have different evidence gates: DURIP or defense university instrumentation; NSF MRI and shared research infrastructure; NIH S10, SIG, SIS, or research-core equipment; and agency-specific equipment programs. Add discipline or instrument terms only after checking that they do not hide adjacent routes the research office wants to monitor. Use them for agency context, but keep the equipment decision record separate because instrument configuration, shared use, internal selection, and lifecycle support drive this job. A saved search or MCP workflow can help a research office monitor changing windows and route new notices to the right campus team. It cannot decide institutional eligibility or produce a user group. The useful continuation is to monitor the exact mission lane, then rerun the current official announcement against the instrument and users before proposal work begins.
